Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
