An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but immediately told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
