A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
